EBRD strengthens support for Bulgaria’s municipal infrastructure

The EBRD is extending a €35 million loan to the Bulgarian Fund for Local Authorities and Governments JSC (FLAG) to expand the fund’s lending to Bulgarian municipalities for co-financing of EU post accession grants. The transaction is an extension of an existing €35 million credit line of which 60 per cent will be syndicated while the EBRD will retain an additional €14 million for its own account.

This IDA grant co-financed the construction of safe drinking water systems that serves more than 50,000 people and school latrines for more than 7,000 students and teachers in rural Haiti. It also helped establish professional operators and water and sanitation committees in nine communes and provided hands on training to the operators and committees in community mobilization, conflict resolution, billing and accounting, meter reading and repairing, chlorination as well as plumbing.

While continuous conveyors have become the muck removal system of choice in long, hard rock TBM tunnels, they have gained acceptance in soft ground tunnels only recently. Soft ground, EPB TBM-driven tunnels provide a challenging environment for continuous conveyors due to the variety of materials present. The design of both horizontal and vertical soft ground conveyors will vary depending on the types of excavated material, amount of water present, and other factors. This paper will address the challenges of effective conveyance in different ground materials by analyzing conveyor performance in several recent EPB TBM projects.
