Two Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines, the largest in the world with a diameter of 15.43 meters, successfully completed their crossing beneath the Yangtze River in Shanghai. On May 28 and September 5, 2008, the two Mixshields met their target shafts precisely on the Yangtze river island Changxiang – far ahead of schedule. The 7,472 meter long tunnels connecting the Shanghai district of Pudong with Changxiang island have created efficient transport systems in only 20 months.

After the successful completion of the "Shanghai Changjiang Under River Tunnel Project", two further Herrenknecht Mixshield giants, each with a diameter of 14.93m, crossed beneath the Yangtze River. They reached their target in Nanjing on May 20 and August 22, respectively, after their underground journey of almost 3km. The "Nanjing Yangtze River Tunnel" with its three traffic lanes in each direction will ease the traffic load in this big city.

Management of industrial wastewaters from the metal processing industries and decision support for municipal planning of wastewater management measures were the topics of the workshops held on 14 and 15 May, 2009 in Nam Dinh/Vietnam, bringing together actors from industry and local government. The workshop was prepared and organized by Fraunhofer UMSICHT in collaboration with the Vietnamese Institute of Geological Science, the Nam Dinh Provincial Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the People´s Committee Nam Dinh in the framework of the BMBF funded research project IWRM Vietnam. The research project focuses on methods to implement an Integrated Water Resources Management concept in order to enhance improved and sustainable water and land use in river basin areas.

HOBAS, the leading supplier of CC-GRP (Centrifugally Cast Glassfiber Reinforced Plastics) Pipe Systems, advanced production technology and know-how, achieved a consolidated turnover of approximately 200 Million Euros and grew by 11% within one year only. From 2006, the Group boosted pre tax profits by 26%. These are company results of which Ms. Strohmaier, who was appointed Managing Director of the Group in summer 2007, is very proud: "In spite of the tense general economic situation last year HOBAS peaked in its performance and closed the business year far over the set target."

In 2008, Herrenknecht AG has once again created new apprenticeship training positions. 65 young men and women began their working lives in fall 2008 by taking up either an apprenticeship or a cooperative education program. The number of trainees has increased by more than 20 percent compared to the previous year. Herrenknecht is providing training to a total of 178 young people. In spring 2009, the trainees and the team of trainers will be moving into new premises which have a useable floor space of about 2,800 square meters.
